I’m excited to share my smile journey with everyone because I have wanted to “fix” my smile for so long! I’ve been putting it off for a long time because it’s so hard to balance taking the time to go to dental appointments with working. Plus, traditional braces and Invisalign procedures are so expensive! In a group that I’m a part of on Facebook, someone mentioned Smile Direct Club. I had never heard of it before, but it turned out to be answer to fixing my smile.
I decided to share my journey on my YouTube channel and on my blog because there are so many mixed reviews online. The problem with reviews is that they don’t share the whole story from start to finish of what the Smile Direct Club Experience is like. I’m documenting my journey from start to finish. I went for my first appointment and signed up for my plan back in January, and I received my aligners in March. Here are more details about the Smile Direct Club experience and how my experience has been so far!
How Did I Sign Up for My Smile Direct Club Appointment?
I signed up for the smile direct club online. It was a very simple process. When you go to the website, you can either have an impressions kit sent to your home, or you can go to the office. If you have an office near you, you can usually get a same-day appointment. I went online and signed up for a same-day appointment. You can visit the website and set up your appointment here http://mbsy.co/ltTwS.
How Was the Initial Visit and 3-D Scan Experience?
The initial visit was an easy experience. I went to the Houston location, which was off of Westheimer. When I went into the waiting area, I was greeted by a young woman who signed me in for my appointment. I had to wait about 15 to 20 minutes after my appointment time to be seen. While I was waiting, I was offered water and there were magazines to read.
Once it was time for my appointment, a young woman (Rosie) came out and greeted me. She walked me back to the examination room. It was minimally decorated with a curtain separating my room and the person next to me. Once my appointment started, she asked me a few questions, and I filled out some yes/no questions on an iPad and wrote out the issues with my teeth.
She then took some pictures of my teeth with an iPad. I brushed my teeth, and she used a wand to do a 3-D scan of my mouth. It was completely painless and there is no radiation. It was also pretty cool because I could see my teeth on the screen in 3-D on the monitor in front of us.
After the scans were complete, she showed me how the aligners look, and talked to me about how to care from them, and a few details about the program. She then asked me if I had any questions and talked to me about the pricing. She gave me a few minutes to think about my options, then we finalized everything and I got a copy of the agreement and my goody bag with my whitening kit and information.
You can check out my video with details about the visit.
How Much Does Smile Direct Club Cost in 2018 and is There a Payment Plan?
If you go with the one time payment, the cost is $1,850. (The $250.00 lab fee is waived.) If you do the payment plans, add $250.00 for a total of $2,100! When your plan is set up, your card is charged $250.00 and then you pay $80.00/month for 24 months. Keep in mind that this was the price I was quoted on January 30, 2018. Prices may vary, so check with the Smile Direct Club for accurate prices.
I also found out that my insurance company will cover part of the cost, so I will be filing a claim with my insurance company soon.
Have I Had Any Problems With the Payment Plan?
No. I did have an occurrence that had to be handled. When I signed up online, I secured my appointment with a bank card. When I was in the office, I gave a different card for my down payment. After the visit, I went online to make sure the primary card was the correct one, as I planned to close the other bank account. For whatever reason, the first card was charged for one of my payments. Of course it did not go through because the account as closed.
I got an email from Smile Direct Club letting me know the payment did not go through. Then, I got a phone call the next day. But, I missed the call. When I went online it said that the correct card was the primary one. Thankfully, when I called, it was resolved. They removed the old card, and updated and charged the correct one.
I would recommend calling to make any changes to your card or to ask any questions. Their customer service is 24 hours/day (800) 848-7566.
How Long Did it Take to Get My Smile Direct Club Aligners?
I placed my order on January 30, 2018. They estimated that it would take 5 weeks for me to get my aligners. I received them on March 8, 2018, and they were delivered via FedEx overnight shipping. That was 5 weeks and 2 days. If you don’t count the day I ordered, or the day I received them, it was EXACTLY 5 weeks, as promised!
What Comes in the Kit With The Aligners?
The aligners come in a recyclable purple box, inside of a cardboard shipping box. Inside of the purple box, there are 3-4 trays. On the first tray, I had my smile guide, my holder for my aligners, and more brightening solution for my whitening kit.
On the second and third tray were my aligners. They were packaged by week and month. Each strip has a month of aligners. There is one for week one of that month, one for week two, and one for weeks three and four. Rosie had explained to me that I would wear one set for two weeks. The last tray was empty because my plan is only 4 months.
You can check out my unboxing video on YouTube, where I show you what all comes in the kit.
How Do My Aligners Look and Feel?
The aligners are made of BPA-free plastic. They are really lightweight, and when I put them on, they felt tight. That is a normal part of the process, but it will take some getting used to. You can’t even tell I have them on. My co-worker who has Invisalign was very impressed. I even got some compliments on my smile yesterday, which was my first day wearing them.
I noticed that after I took my aligners out to eat, brushed my teeth, and put them back in, the aligners felt a bit “tighter.” That should get better over time, but I’m trying to take them out as little as possible.
What are Some Tips for Wearing Smile Direct Club Aligners?
I made a little “smile care” kit, with my aligner case, a travel toothbrush, a travel size toothpaste, floss, my tool to take them in and out, and my “chewies,” which help me bite my aligners into place. (They will explain everything during your initial visit, or you can always call customer service.) I’m keeping this “kit” in my purse with me, so I will always be prepared. I’m also keeping mouthwash in my desk at work.
I’d recommend that you make a smile kit so you will have what you need with you. Also, read the guide that comes in your kit and comply with everything so that you don’t run into any problems. I’m also going to buy an electronic toothbrush to keep my smile as healthy as possible. As I learn more about wearing aligners, I’ll be sharing additional tips.
Would I Recommend the Smile Direct Club?
Yes!!! I’ve really enjoyed this process so much that I’ve become a Smile Ambassador. I’ve found the plan to be affordable and easy, and the process has been really convenient for me as a working person.
