If you’re anything like me, you probably work a lot and rarely have time to watch television and movies. But, if you’re under a stay at home order during this Coranavirus quarantine, then you’ll probably be spending a lot more time at home!
I’m still working from home, and you may be too, but it’s important to make some time to relax and unwind on the weekends and watch something other than the news. If you’re looking for interesting and motivational films to watch, here are my picks for films to watch during your Coronavirus quarantine!
These movies will keep you motivated and ready to go after your goals.
She Did That
She Did That is a Netflix documentary that profiles the stories of black female entrepreneurs. In the film, they discuss their struggles, triumphs, and how they managed to build their own brands and successful businesses.
I watched this film a few weeks ago a the salon. My hairdresser and I enjoyed hearing each of the women’s stories and we discussed our own entrepreneurial journeys. This is a great film to watch with someone else.
During the quarantine, you can have a virtual watch party with a group of girlfriends, where you can watch and discuss the film together. Afterward, share your career and business goals and ways that you can work together to support one another.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker
Self Made is a Netflix original movie loosely based on the life of famous black female entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker, the self-made first woman millionaire in America. Madam C.J. Walker built her empire by creating hair care products for African-American women during a time when black women’s hair care needs were largely ignored by the beauty industry.
Madame C.J. Walker was born as Sarah Breedlove, and her parents were slaves. She escaped oppressive working conditions to pursue entrepreneurship, at a time when she faced discrimination both as a woman and as a person of color.
Her story is inspirational during these trying times because she was able to achieve her goals even as she faced incredible adversity. I highly recommend checking out the movie and researching her real life for inspiration to pursue your entrepreneurial endeavors.
Nappily Ever After
The next film on my list is perfect for you if you’re ready to make radical changes in your personal life and career. Nappily Ever After is about a career woman who is under pressure to keep up with mainstream standards of beauty. When she has an accident at the hair salon, she discovers who she is inside and out.
So many of us are undergoing drastic changes at work and at home, and it may feel like you’ll never get back on track. This movie, starring Sanaa Lathan, can help you see the light at the end of the tunnel and reflect on how you can become the person you really want to be both at work and at home.
American Factory: A Conversation with the Obamas
Are you short on time? Between working on your own career and taking care of your family during the quarantine, you may not have a lot of time to sit and watch a movie. American Factory: A Conversation with the Obamas is a short film that will inspire you to tell your story.
In this short discussion, the Obamas speak with the makers of the documentary American Factory about the importance of being yourself and connecting with other people. During this time of isolation and separation, it’s important that we stay connected with one another.
After watching the film, consider the ways that you can share your story. Use the power of the Internet to stay connected virtually until we are all able to gather together in person again.
When you have time, you can also watch the full American Factory documentary, which is about how an American factory and a Chinese company came together – a story that’s more timely than ever.
The Pursuit of Happyness
Last, but certainly not least, I recommend that you watch The Pursuit of Happyness. This is my favorite motivational movie of all time. It stars Will Smith and it’s an adaptation of the real-life story of Chris Gardner.
Gardner experienced homelessness while working as a salesman. He also struggled to take care of his son while pursuing his goals. After an incredible opportunity, he works to turn his life around. When I was in law school, I watched this story over and over again whenever I needed motivation, and I still watch it often today.
It’s important to take advantage of the time at home to work towards your goals, but it’s also important to maintain balance and spend some time recharging and renewing your motivation.
Stories like the ones told in these films can provide inspiration and hope during these unprecedented times. If you get a chance to watch any of these films on Netflix, let me know what you think!
