People are often surprised to find out that I work from home full time in a professional job. When people think of working from home, they think often think you have to become an influencer or have a huge following online. Or, they think that they don’t have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. The truth is that there are many ways to work from home full time using your career skills.
I’m going to share the top three ways that you can work from home as a professional working woman. You can use your speaking skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, consulting skills, and so much more to work from the comfort of home. I’ve used all three of these methods to earn an income online working from home, and you can, too.
Work Remotely from Home as a Freelancer
The first way that you can work from home as a career woman is by becoming a freelancer. A freelancer provides a service to individuals or businesses on a contractual basis. The best part about being a freelancer is that modern technology makes it easy to work from home or anywhere in the world, and you can also work on your own time as long as you meet project deadlines.
You may be wondering what type of services you can offer as a freelancer. Well, you can offer the same or similar services to what you do now for a living. For example, if you work full time as an accountant, you can moonlight as an online freelance accountant and take on clients on a contract basis. If you’re a teacher, you can work online as a virtual teacher providing lessons to students all over the country or the world.
You can also choose to provide freelance services that are not related to what you do now for a living, but still use your career skills. This can be especially beneficial if you work in a career field where taking on an extra job in the same field might be a conflict. When I started freelancing, I started freelancing as a writer and editor, even though I was working full time as an attorney and HR consultant.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and I had already been a blogger for many years, so writing for other people was a natural next step. You may also have career skills that you are currently using or can use to offer freelancing services. For example, you may work full time as a nurse but if you have graphic design skills, you can freelance part-time as a graphic designer.
To get started, sit down and brainstorm what career skills you use at work every day, what skills you use for your hobby, and what skills you used in the past at various jobs, for clubs and organizations or just for fun. Out of these, which would you like to market and sell as a service? Once you’ve narrowed it down, you can join a site like Upwork or simply start marketing your services and accepting clients.
Work Remotely from Home for an Employer
The next way to work from home might be a surprise to you, but you can actually work remotely for an employer! Yep, as technology advances, more and more people are working from home for a company. When you think about it, most of the work that you do throughout the day in an office is done in front of a computer, online, or on the phone.
You can do much of that same work from home! If your employer offers remote work as an option, you can pitch your idea to work from home. Make sure that you’ve thought of a plan for how all of your work duties can be done form home. You can even suggest working remotely part time and coming into the office for meetings.
If working remotely for your current employer is not an option, don’t fret. There are lots of companies that hire remote workers in professional jobs. Simply look for remote work, flexible location, or virtual, as the work location when you search for a job. Sometimes jobs have a flexible work location, even though it’s not advertised.
I work from home as an attorney and consultant full time, and when I applied for my job, it was not advertised as a remote position. So, if you see a job that interests you, go ahead and apply for it and find out if remote work in an option. You can also find remote work jobs on websites like remote.co.
Work Remotely from Home as an Entrepreneur
Another way that you can work from home using your career skills is an entrepreneur. Although being a freelancer might be considered a type of entrepreneurship, in my experience, there is a difference.
When you are a freelancer, you are generally pitching for jobs on a case by case basis. You work when you feel like it, and you are asking individuals or business owners if you can work for them. When you are an entrepreneur, you advertise your services, but people come to you, and your goal is ongoing relationship where people utilize your services or buy your products over and over again.
As a freelancer, you will likely change up the type of services you are pitching based on what the client needs. However, as an entrepreneur, you have a set services and products that you offer, and people will come to you to purchase or apply for your services.
Once you’ve been a freelancer for a while, or worked for other people for a while, you might consider transitioning to entrepreneurship. As a freelancer, you might not have your own website or defined services, but as an entrepreneur, you will establish your online presence, set up your business entity, and define your niche and what you will sell.
For example, instead of offering freelance accounting services on a case by case basis, as an entrepreneur and business owner, you will set up your accounting business. You’ll define what type of accounting services you offer for set prices. You can eventually add other streams of revenue like digital products and courses, speaking engagements, and events.
One of the ways that I’ve earned an income online as an entrepreneur is by selling digital products online in the form of eBooks. And on this blog, I plan to offer products and services for sell as well. People can visit my website to buy from me online. It’s a great way for me to share my passions and earn an income at the same time.
To start your entrepreneurial journey, you can set up your website, add a page listing your services, and a way for clients to contact you or book you. Even if you are still working full time, you can start building up your clientele so that you can earn an extra income or eventually even transition to entrepreneurship and working from home full time!
